Every household in Germany is required to pay this fee, regardless of whether they use the services or not.

The fee ensures that public broadcasting remains independent from commercial interests and government influence, offering a wide range of programming, including news, cultural, educational, and entertainment content. The current fee is approximately €18.36 per month (as of January 2025).

Foreign residents living in Germany must also pay the Rundfunkbeitrag. It applies to all types of residences, whether you own or rent. The fee is generally paid monthly, quarterly, or annually. Exemptions are available for students receiving certain financial aid, individuals with specific disabilities, or those receiving social welfare benefits.

Who has to pay the fee?

The Rundfunkbeitrag is mandatory for the following groups:

Singles, Families, and Shared Households (Wohngemeinschaften)

The fee is paid per household, not per person. However, there are exceptions:

Students receiving BAföG (financial aid) and not living with their parents can apply for an exemption.

Pupils and trainees who live in shared housing (e.g., dormitories) may also share the fee like in any shared household.

Self-employed People and Freelancers Working from Home

If you work from home and use a part of your residence as an office, the household fee already covers your usage.

However, if you operate a separate office outside your home, you may need to register separately for a commercial Rundfunkbeitrag.

In addition to the groups listed above, there are other specific cases where individuals or entities may need to pay the Rundfunkbeitrag. For example, businesses, institutions, or vehicle owners may also be required to contribute under certain conditions. For a full list of obligations and detailed explanations, visit the official Beitragsservice website.

Who does not have to pay the fee?

Certain groups of people are exempt from paying the Rundfunkbeitrag:

Students: If they receive BAföG (a form of financial aid) and do not live with their parents.

People with disabilities: If they meet specific criteria, such as receiving certain types of disability benefits.

Social welfare recipients: Individuals who receive social benefits like unemployment benefits, social assistance, or basic security in old age.

People living in care homes: Residents of nursing or care homes are also exempt under certain conditions.

Individuals with a secondary residence: If you have a secondary or temporary residence in Germany (e.g., a second home), you can apply for an exemption. The Rundfunkbeitrag only needs to be paid for one main residence per household.

How to register for the GEZ fee?

When you move to Germany and register your address at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents’ registration office), your information is shared with the Beitragsservice (the agency responsible for the Rundfunkbeitrag). In most cases, you will receive a letter from the Beitragsservice within a few weeks, asking you to register your household and start paying the fee. The letter will contain instructions on how to register online, by mail, or by phone.
If you don’t receive a letter, it’s important to take the initiative and register your household. This can be done online through the Beitragsservice website by providing your personal details and address. Once registered, you will receive a customer number and payment details.

Check your rental agreement

Before registering for the Rundfunkbeitrag, it’s a good idea to check your rental agreement, especially if you are renting a furnished apartment or temporary accommodation. In some cases, the landlord might already be paying the Rundfunkbeitrag and including it in the rent. If this is the case, you do not need to pay it separately. Ask your landlord for clarification if the contract does not clearly state whether the fee is included.

By understanding these rules and checking your specific situation, you can ensure you comply with the Rundfunkbeitrag regulations while avoiding unnecessary payments or penalties.

[21,53

post-8040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-housing","category-expats
["GET
